Nashville’s Mookie Betts wins third World Series ring

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Nashville native and baseball superstar Mookie Betts joined an exclusive group Wednesday night.

The pride of John Overton High School is the only active position player in Major League Baseball to experience three World Series championships. The third win came in the form of a 7-6 Dodgers win over the Yankees in Game 5 on Wednesday night in New York.

This year’s World Series win was the eighth championship for Los Angeles and second in the last four years. Betts was on both teams.

In 2020, the Dodgers took advantage of a shortened season due to the COVID-19 shutdown to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. That year, it took the Dodgers five games to dismiss the Yankees, and Betts was a big part of LA’s success.

Betts was involved in the most controversial play of the season, if not the year, in Game 4 on Tuesday night when he chased a ball down right field, hitting two Yankees fans. His jump caused him to throw his glove partially over the wall, and the fans grabbed his glove and ripped the baseball from the webbing.

They credited Bets with the catch, even though the ball fell back onto the field. The fans? They were escorted from Yankee Stadium and banned from Game 5.

At the plate, he took a 5:18 lead in the series against New York, but scored the winning run in Game 5 on Wednesday night with a clutch sac fly to center in the 8th inning. His punch from the box came showed that he knew the run was important.

Betts is the pride of John Overton High School, where he dominated in both basketball and baseball. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2011 Amateur Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox and foregone a college career at the University of Tennessee.

He became the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 2018 after winning his first World Series with the Red Sox.

Now that the baseball offseason is here, you can expect Betts to give back to the community. Be 5050 Foundation helps develop sports programs for youth from underrepresented areas and encourages children to become active in sports.
