New York Rangers or Colorado Avalanche superstar?

Both the Colorado Avalanche and the New York Rangers are tries to negotiate massive long-term contract extensions for their superstar players. With the season nearly a month into the season, several big contracts have already been signed around the league that could pave the way. Shea Theodore extended his contract with the Vegas Golden Knights. The Rangers have already completed negotiations with star winger Alexis Lafreniere. The Dallas Stars have signed their elite goaltender Jake Oettinger, making him one of the highest paid at his position.

That could give the Rangers and Avalanche hope that their remaining contract extensions will sort themselves out. The Rangers have the NHL’s best goaltender, Igor Shesterkin, on an expiring contract and the Avalanche have elite winger Mikko Rantanen who wants to get paid. Both players were There are rumors that extensions are about to be signed but nothing has happened since the start of the last offseason. With so many contracts already in place, the question arises: which superstar will sign their contract extension next?

Avalanche fans may say it’s their star player, but at this point in negotiations the outlook isn’t all that bright. Recent reports shared that Rantanen’s camp and Colorado stay away from men contract discussions.

This gap likely exists because the Avalanche are unwilling to pay Rantanen the same salary as their top player Nathan MacKinnon, who makes $12.6 million per year. Not only that, but Colorado may be thinking even further ahead with defenseman Cale Makar currently making $9 million per year. When Makar’s contract expires in 2027, he will likely sign the richest contract ever signed by a defenseman in the NHL. That may not leave Rantanen enough room to get the contract he deserves or is willing to sign.

There is only one option left: the Rangers goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin. The negotiation process was arduous for both sides. Shesterkin doesn’t just want to sign richest contract Since he has ever been signed by a goalie, he would like his salary to be a proportional percentage of the Rangers’ salary cap. The Rangers reportedly offered him a contract worth $11 million per year, which Shesterkin turned down. The gap still appears to be wide, but if the Rangers are willing to put in a little more effort, the problem should resolve itself fairly soon.

Negotiations are ongoing and fluid, but it appears the Rangers and Shesterkin are getting closer to a deal. With some progress already made and the solution known, the Rangers superstar is likely to be the next to sign a massive contract extension.
