Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel admitted Thursday that he took tough action against Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson for leaving the game for a play against the Houston Texans last week.

Talk about the Scoop City Podcast (starting at the 3 minute mark)Daniel said:

“I hit Anthony Richardson pretty hard last episode with the whole elimination thing, and rightly so. You can’t do that. Then we find out he’s being benched, and not just because of the game. It’s about moving forward.”‘ So that was a bit crazy because I agree he needs to be benched based on his play. I agree he needs to be a role model through the tap out thing. So why does this surprise me so much?”

During Sunday’s 20-23 loss to the Texans, Richardson tapped his helmet, which is usually a player’s signal when he needs to leave the game.

Richardson went to the sideline for a play, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco came in to hand the ball off on third down, and the Colts settled for a field goal.

After the game, Richardson told reporters that he was not struggling with an injury and simply left the game because he was tired, saying: “I was tired. I won’t lie. That was a lot of running. I didn’t think I was tired.” I’ll be able to play the next piece, so I just told Shane I needed a break right there.

“What do we do? Are you taking yourself out of the game? And pat yourself on the head? Lie to the media. Never say that again in your entire career. You’ve just lost the respect of every football player and every individual. “I’m a quarterback and every offensive player that’s ever played the game, but that’s inexcusable in my entire life about being benched. That’s how I think about it.

According to ESPN Stephen HolderColts head coach Shane Steichen announced Wednesday that he was benching Richardson, noting that Flacco would be the team’s quarterback “in the future.”

That suggests Flacco will keep the starting job as long as he performs well, which puts the future of the 22-year-old Richardson in question.

Richardson is only in the middle of his second NFL season after Indy selected him No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he has just 10 NFL starts in his career.

While Daniel acknowledged that benching Richardson was the right move for now and suggested that the Colts’ decision-makers believe their team is better than their 4-4 record suggests, he also said that the organization “does not allow (Richardson) to develop.”

The 2024 season has been difficult for Richardson so far, as he completed just 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions while also rushing for 242 yards and a score.

In comparison, Flacco has shown a much better understanding of the offense, throwing for 716 yards, seven touchdowns and one pick in four appearances, including two starts.

Flacco is nearing the end of his career at age 40, but the decision to select him over a young quarterback they drafted high in Richardson suggests the Colts believe they now have a roster that is capable of winning.
