The five-year, $255 million contract Jalen Hurts signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in April 2023 came at a price.

One of the terms of the contract states that the Eagles quarterback is not allowed to play golf.

Hurts told reporters about the clause after teaming up with running back Saquon Barkley and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for a go-round on Wednesday golf with former President Barack Obama.

“To see him out there having a good time and talking a little nonsense, that was cool,” Hurts said of playing with the former president Martin Frank des Delaware News Journal. “I told him he doesn’t want these problems yet. I can’t play golf at the moment. According to the contract, I can’t play golf. His day will come.”

The comment comes after Hurts told reporters in August that “Mr. “I told Lurie not to play golf.”

The round of golf, held at Merion Golf Club outside Philadelphia, comes amid a three-game winning streak for the Eagles. Hurts and his teammates will now look to extend that streak to four straight with a Week 9 win over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Hurts originally told reporters that he took up tennis this summer in part because of his golf limitations.

Jalen Hurts, who took up some tennis this summer, said he doesn’t play golf.
Hurts: “Mr. Lurie told me not to play golf – funny story, I’ll tell you that another day.”

When a reporter followed up on that comment Wednesday, Hurts answered that “it is still not time to tell the story,” but confirmed that the restriction was in his contract.

Whatever clause is in Hurts’ contract, it apparently didn’t make it into the three-year, $37.75 million deal Barkley signed with the Eagles after leaving the New York Giants in free agency. The running back called The golf outing was “one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had in my life.”

Hurts had shown some public interest in golf before the new deal. The quarterback shared some videos of himself practicing his swing on social media in February 2023.

The Eagles know their hopes of returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023 depend on Hurts. Lurie apparently isn’t willing to let Hurts risk his health by continuing to work on his swing.

Hurts passed for four touchdowns and scored five more on the ground during the winning streak following Philadelphia’s bye in Week 5. The Eagles are hoping for another big performance from Hurts on Sunday as they attempt to challenge the 6-2 Dallas Cowboys for the top spot in the NFC East.
